What Is The Right To Information Act?

The Right To Information Act 2005, was promulgated in 2005. It is an Act to provide for setting out the practical regime of right to information for citizens to secure access to information under the control of Public Authorities, in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every Public Authority.

What does Right To Information mean?

It includes the right to:

  • Inspect works, documents, records.
  • Take notes, extracts or certified copies of documents or records.
  • Take certified samples of material.
  • Obtain information in form of printouts, diskettes, floppies, tapes, video cassettes or in any other electronic mode or through printouts

North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd., a Govt of India Enterprise (wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC since March, 2020) provides access to information under the Act, which is held by it or held under its control and ensures that a constant endeavour is taken to provide as much information suo motu to the public at regular intervals through public domain, so that the public have minimum resort to use of the RTI Act, 2005 to obtain information.

How to Apply

1. Introduction

Any citizen of India who desires to obtain any information under the Right to Information Act, 2005 may make a request preferably in the

2. Application Fee

The application must be accompanied by a prescribed fee drawn in favour of NEEPCO Ltd., payable at Shillong. Current application fee is:

Application feeRs. 10/- (Rupees ten only)
Mode of paymentBy cash against proper receipt or by demand draft/banker's cheque/Indian Postal Order.

BPL applicants are exempt from fees upon producing valid proof.

3. Additional Fee

If information is to be provided, the requester will be informed of the additional fees required. Applicable rates include:

a.For each page (in A-4 or A-3 size paper) created or copiedRs. 2/- per page
b.For a copy in larger size paperActual charge or cost price
c.For samples or modelsActual cost or price
d.For inspection of recordsNo fee for the first hour; Rs. 5/- for each additional hour

For information under sub-section (5) of Section 7:

a.For information provided in diskette or floppyRs. 50/- per diskette or floppy
b.For information provided in printed formAt publication price or Rs. 2/- per photocopy page

Mode of payment is the same as application fee.

4. Appeal

If a requester receives no response within the specified time, or is dissatisfied with the PIO's decision, an appeal can be made within thirty days to the Appellate Authority.
